NJ BMW Service Tips: Adding Wiper Fluid

Wiper fluid is an important assistant to your wiper blades in the mission to keep your windshield clean. Especially during the winter months, when snow and ice can hinder your visibility, it's good to have your reservoir full. If the low wiper fluid light has come on on your dash, or you've pressed the button and nothing's coming out, it's time to top off!

Before you get started, be sure your car is turned off and the parking brake is activated. Next, get some high quality wiper fluid and a funnel handy. These items can be purchased at any automotive shop, as well as many grocery stores. If you're not having any luck finding them there, you can always schedule service at our NJ BMW Service center.

How to Refill Your Wiper Fluid

• Locate the hood release lever on the inside of your vehicle and pull it. Next, walk around front and disengage the hood latch. Lift the hood and look for a support rod along the side of your vehicle's engine area. If your car has one, use it to prop up the hood; if not, you'll need to find a different prop.
• Open the windshield washer fluid you've purchased and set it on the ground, next to the funnel.
• Find the windshield wiper reservoir cap. Typically, there is an image depicting windshield wipers on it. Open the cap and set it aside.
• Insert the funnel into the wiper fluid reservoir, and pour wiper fluid into the funnel until the level rises to just below the fill line.
• Remove the funnel and replace the cap.
• Close the hood, making sure the latch engages. You're now good to go!

Putting off refilling your wiper fluid is bad for your car. As the lubricant for the washer fluid pump and the hoses around the reservoir, this system can run into problems without it. If there's no washer fluid in the system, internal parts can corrode and plastic parts can degrade. This can lead to cracks in the system.
