The last thing you want when you're all set to head to work or on vacation is a car problem, especially if your vehicle won’t even start. You could end up missing your flight, an important day of work or class, your child’s graduation, and so much more. This issue is common and if you’ve ever had a problem with your vehicle starting, you’ll know that it could be very frustrating. With that being said, it’s important that you know how to troubleshoot this problem and luckily for you, our Park Ave BMW dealer, serving the Hackensack area, is here to help you prepare for some of the most common reasons why your car won't start.

Reasons Why Your Vehicle Won’t Start

Dead Battery

The most common reason why a vehicle won’t start is without a doubt, a dead battery. Batteries can drain for various reasons and more times than not is the result of user error. If you forget to turn your headlights or cabin lights off prior to exiting your vehicle, you’ll likely wake up the next morning to a car that won’t start. Batteries also drain naturally and need to be replaced after a while but, either way, you’ll want to hook up a set of jumper cables to help diagnose the problem.

If your car starts right up after being jumped, it was probably the result of a dead battery, but why was it dead in the first place? If you’ve noticed that you left an accessory or any type of lighting on for an extended period of time, you’ll know that your battery was just drained. On the other hand, if nothing was left on, it’s likely that its time to replace your battery.

Bad Ignition Switch

If your vehicle won’t start after a few tries or it starts and stalls suddenly, it could be due to a bad ignition switch. The best way to check if it is indeed your ignition switch is to turn the key to the start position and let go. If you let it come back to the “on” position, a series of lights could be displayed on your dash, warning you of the issue. If these lights go out after the ignition switch snaps back in, it’s likely that you’re going to need to get your ignition switch fixed.

Broken Starter

When your vehicle won’t start, a broken starter is probably the easiest issue to diagnose. It’s in the name, but a starter is the driving force of an engine and without it, a car won’t turn on. To check if the problem is a broken starter, attempt to start the vehicle – if you hear a clicking noise when turning the key, you’re going to need a replacement starter.
